Big ideas for a cleaner future

Alongside the causes and projects we run day to day, we sometimes see how bigger pieces could fit together — for a fairer, cleaner energy future. Some are arguments we're making, some are ambitious projects we'd help make happen, and some are challenges too big for any one charity — but all worth putting in front of the people who can act on them.

Wasted Wind, Higher Bills

We're paying wind farms to switch off — and paying for it on our bills.

On windy days Scotland's wind farms are paid to stop, because the grid can't move the power to where it's needed — around £343m of clean electricity wasted in 2025 alone. We highlight the cost and the waste, and make the case for fixing it, so clean power is used, not binned, and bills come down.

A plain-English explainer

Cheap Power, High Bills

One picture: why cheap wind still means an expensive bill — and where the money goes.

The companion to Wasted Wind, told as a simple money-flow anyone can follow in a minute. Two kinds of power feed the grid; gas sets the price for everyone; the money then leaks three ways — a windfall to generators (taxed at 45%), wind we pay to waste, and a 'green premium' that mostly bought a certificate. It's all legal — so the job is to change the rules.

Curtailed-Wind Green Hydrogen

Don't switch the turbines off — turn the surplus into clean fuel.

Instead of paying wind turbines to stop, redirect that otherwise-wasted power into a green-hydrogen generator: clean fuel for trucks, buses and the gas network, with oxygen as a saleable by-product. The practical answer to the wasted-wind problem — one we'd help make happen as a community partner.

The AI & Energy Clash

AI is devouring power — so put the data centres where the wind is wasted, and warm homes with the heat.

AI's data centres are hungry for electricity — yet Scotland pays wind farms hundreds of millions to switch off because the grid is full. The case for 'wind-native' data centres that run on that otherwise-wasted clean power, and pipe their waste heat into community heating. Clean power in, warm homes out — with our own map showing the sites and how far the heat could reach.

Sustainable Seas

Let the fish breed — real protection, an end to dead‑fish discards, and smarter gear.

Our seas are being emptied and bottom trawling is still legal in ~90% of the UK's 'protected' areas, while good fish are thrown back dead under a discard ban that isn't working. The case for real spawning protection, community marine reserves, and gear that spares dolphins and seabirds — including LED‑lit nets that cut bycatch by up to 95%.

Fix the Bottleneck

Scotland's wind is stuck behind the wires — free it, and the waste ends.

Scotland makes far more clean wind power than the grid can carry south, so we pay the turbines to switch off and burn gas instead — over £343m wasted in 2025. The fix is more and better transmission: the HVDC links already being built, done faster and more resiliently. The case for treating the bottleneck as the emergency it is — with our own map showing the farms stuck behind the wall.

Circling for a Slot

Build the runway to end the circling — not to add flights — and levy the pollution that remains.

Around 311 aircraft a day circle in Heathrow's four holding “stacks”, burning fuel and emitting CO₂ to travel nowhere. Our unusual case: back the capacity — even a further runway — strictly to let planes land without holding, with a binding cap so it can't become more flights, plus a polluter-pays levy on avoidable holding. Big fuel and carbon savings, honestly argued.

What the Road Sheds

The biggest microplastic you've never heard of — and a tyre chemical that's killing salmon.

Ask what fills the sea with plastic and people say straws and bags — but vehicle tyres are a bigger source, shedding ~6 million tonnes of microplastics a year (~45% of the total in land and water). A tyre chemical, 6PPD-quinone, washes off roads and kills salmon — a real threat to Scotland's rivers — while brake dust becomes the new tailpipe. The case for tackling the pollution we don't see.

Breathing Space

Cleaning the air where people actually breathe it — the school gate, the busy junction.

Air pollution spikes at hotspots — a nursery by a main road, a busy junction. The cheapest, best-proven fix is a well-placed hedge (cutting roadside particle exposure by up to ~50%), while some headline gadgets like moss walls are overhyped. The case for tackling air where it's breathed, backing what the evidence supports — with a live air-quality map, and an honest line between clean air and CO₂.
